On the basis of a newspaper article, Aspley and Bracken Ridge, two of Brisbane’s outlying northern suburbs, are among the city’s most sustainable suburbs. The basis for this assessment is the uptake of sustainability rebates for home retrofits through pool covers, water tanks, solar water etc. While we should applaud everyone who has taken advantage of these incentives and the government for providing them, there are other measures of sustainability that really need to be factored into this equation in relation to suburban and urban living. This means there is a need for better communications that assert more appropriate measures of suburban and/or domestic sustainability, e.g. car use, in a much more informative and empowering way so that communities and individual have greater understanding of the opportunities of environmentally-aware living.
