TippingPoint is a UK-based network organisation that connects the arts and climate science and last night they presented a public event at The Edge in Brisbane to explore this connection. Thanks to the British Council for inviting me to Tweet. This is a precursor to the two day collaborative and interdisciplinary workshop exploring the theme of citizenship through art-science. I intended to rewrite this but realised that there’s something quite poetic and laconic about this style of notetaking – small and fragmented provocations, not so much a transcript but markings. So below is a slightly edited version of my twitter stream for #tpoz10. I’ve also included some links. It’s in chronological order commencing with the first post. As a landscape, this stream of conversation raises many questions peppered with uncertainty and contradiction. I can’t help but wonder how such gatherings connect us to place or situate us. What does conversation, judgement and listening really mean for change, culture, power and agency?

lcarroli
No tweeting from #tpoz10 brisbane public event. No wireless available at edge.

lcarroli
have managed to connect – thanks to edge peeps. intros happening now #tpoz10

lcarroli
Stefan Hajkowicz now talking – an expert on decision theory from CSIRO #tp0z10 global foresight project leader

See: http://www.csiro.au/resources/Our-Future-World.html

lcarroli
what investments now for our grandchildren’s benefits. megatrends study done for CSIRO. #tpoz10

@lcarroli
megatrends = correlation between armed conflict and resource scarcity. many countries share river systems – water issues/conflict #tpoz10

lcarroli
challenge of how much worse it can be for humans due to climate change – not intergenerational benefits. #tpoz10

lcarroli
but intergenerational losses. It will be worse. #tpoz10

@lcarroli
by 2025, 45% of India will be middle class – lifting out of poverty; will mean carbon impacts. #tpoz10

lcarroli
global food security dilemmas. over next 50 years massive food production challenges. #tpoz10

@lcarroli
Stefan is an economist as well as scientist. global food prices have been declining – some spikes and troughs. #tpoz10

lcarroli
spikes impact the poor. #tpoz10

lcarroli
a lot of evidence that we are keeping pace with demand for food. #tpoz10

lcarroli
are there other constraints stopping us from producing enough food. it’s not production but government, distribution etc? #tpoz10

lcarroli
these are human constraints. #tpoz10

lcarroli
now onto environmental economics – internalising externalities #tpoz10

lcarroli
Stefan Hajkowicz is talking a #tpoz10 event. apologies for mistyping name.

lcarroli
now joined by Natalie Jeremijenko – skyping from usa. #tpoz10

lcarroli
will be talking about the crisis of agency – climate crisis. what do we do? what can we do? #tpoz10

See http://video.dma.ucla.edu/video/climate-crisis-food-crisis-or-crisis-of-agency-natalie-jeremijenko/34

lcarroli
puts art and design to work. thinking about travel. what can we do about plane travel? #tpoz10

lcarroli
flight is incredibly damaging. what do we do? do we give it up or can we redesign flight systems? #tpoz10

lcarroli
could flight be something that regenerates, changes our urban mobility? #tpoz10

See http://www.environmentalhealthclinic.net/xairport

lcarroli
our food on flights has larger eco footprint than thrust systems. #tpoz10

lcarroli
airports are built on our wetlands – significant ecological and biodiverse places.

lcarroli
Natalie Jeremijenko has been thinking about redesigning flight systems. a new class of aircraft that does wet-landing #tpoz10

See http://www.environmentalhealthclinic.net/xairport/projects/wetlanding-zipline

lcarroli
must retrieve the swamps and bogs – started sit different campaign. #tpoz10

See http://www.environmentalhealthclinic.net/xairport/projects/sit-different

lcarroli
sit different campaign starts to reinterpret wetlands – add furniture to engage with wetlands #tpoz10

lcarroli
tadpole highrise #tpoz10 we could hang out in the wetlands?

lcarroli
beautiful imaging of personal flight and practicing wet-landings. #tpoz10

lcarroli
we don’t begin to imagine what personal flight might mean. #tpoz10 re-explore what flight might be.

lcarroli
imagine what it might be like to fly in a radically different way. proposing flight training with strap on simulator and handwings. #tpoz10

lcarroli
enjoy. think. fly. #tpoz10

lcarroli
rethink. redesign our relationship with natural systems. #tpoz10

lcarroli
great food for the imagination. now time for discussions and setting topics. #tpoz10

lcarroli
what topics? #tpoz10

lcarroli
lots of ideas – equity, food, coal, meat, poverty. #tpoz10

lcarroli
#tpoz10 addiction, economics? biological hotspots and awareness. why do we need to fly? understanding population growth.

lcarroli
what leap of the imagination can make things/change more possible? #tpoz10 what is the imagination value?

lcarroli
as an artist, what does sustainable practice mean? #tpoz10

lcarroli
do artists focus on creating awareness or something else? #tpoz10

lcarroli
people know about climate change – they are in denial? must make real change. #tpoz10

lcarroli
nurturing hope for the future. #tpoz10 wide range of topics coming up with a deep sense of compassion – how do we find time for each other?

lcarroli
can we regain an appreciation of time and of each other, better social understanding. #tpoz10

lcarroli
how do we think about large scale changes? #tpoz10

lcarroli
should prosperity = destruction? Can this be changed? #tpoz10

lcarroli
imagination – how can we save the great barrier reef? #tpoz10

lcarroli
need some kind of radical reimagination – education should enable this. great barrier reef solutions need massive change. #tpoz10

lcarroli
urban/suburban situation is being ignored. change needs to come from a good place. #tpoz10

lcarroli
we can’t keep propping up failing systems e.g. GFC. #tpoz10 political systems need to be changed.

lcarroli
cudos to natalie and stefan for their provocations – how can artists & scientists work together? #tpoz10

lcarroli
create discussion through art. #tpoz10 young people are really engaged – can they influence families?

lcarroli
#tpoz10 Topics distilled 1. Food/Meat  2. Time 3. Humanity – who/how we are 4. Reimagining the future (art, hope, possibilities) #tpoz10

lcarroli
5. Global equity #tpoz10

lcarroli
organising discussion groups now. moving around tables to discuss each topic. back soon. #tpoz10

lcarroli
just met ann who is part of a transition town initiative in kedron brook, brisbane. #tpoz10

See http://www.transitiontowns.org

lcarroli
how do we engage with climate refugees? #tpoz10

lcarroli
About 25 people participated tonight. five discussions. now time to report back. #tpoz10

people can’t grasp idea of climate – but still act as though we can control nature. #tpoz10

lcarroli
what new stories? what can art do? what does the arts mean? need broader idea of this.#tpoz10

lcarroli
recognising loss (biodiversity) and responding to issues (drought). #tpoz10

lcarroli
Stephen on global equity. some countries are co2 pigs – we put our standard of living over the lives of others. #tpoz10

lcarroli
culture of consumption is killing us. #tpoz10 how to rise to the challenge of reducing carbon pollution? tax, regulation?

lcarroli
global equity means global responsibility. communication is important. #tpoz10

lcarroli
what is the global consciousness mean for citizenship. #tpoz10

lcarroli
fabio is talking about time. everyone wants to slow down – a need to stop the acceleration of consumption. #tpoz10

lcarroli
slowing down means reconnection. #tpoz10 capitalism demands acceleration and growth. slowing down needs design.

lcarroli
work consumes time – people have less time. tension between developed and developing world #tpoz10

lcarroli
what do we need to be happy? #tpoz10 happiness is a recurring theme here. our way of life is not making us happy.
